Census records 1810 through 1840 have this family in Williamson Co., TN where Joseph and Jane were married in 1804. A copy of the bible record received from Opal Schneiderhahn of St. Louis, MO gave birth and death dates of various family members. Gravestones at the family farm which is located at Sweeneys Hollow near Leipers Fork, TN also gives birth and death dates for Joseph and Jane, Susan Burnes, and Sally Hill Cowan. The gravestone for David Alex Cowan is cracked so the month of death is not readable. Jane Cowan's birthplace is probably in Rowan County, NC where there were many Cowans, Grahams, Skiles and Dobbins. No direct connection has been made from Joseph to the Rowan County Cowans. John K. Fleming in his book, "The Cowans of County Down" surmises that Joseph descended from one of four Cowan brothers who arrived in Philadelphia deom Ireland in 1720.
