Welcome to Cowan Clan United!

Back in 1969 a small newsletter was started by a handful of people. These individuals had an interest in sharing information regarding the surname Cowan and all of its various spellings. My grandmother, Alma Almeta Pyle Cowan, was one of those founders.

The newsletter ran for 8 years. During that time a wealth of information was disseminated. The problem was that the newsletter was quarterly so the information came in spurts every 3 months. Add to that the cost of mail and the time of correspondence back and forth.

Here we are now in the 21st century. Information flows rapidly and abundantly. My grandmother would have loved the quick correspondence of instant messaging and the huge amount of data available to everyone.

With this website I am hoping to provide a place where information can be shared, discussed and collected not only for you and me but for our progeny as well.

Site News Genealogy Section of the site is back up!!!
The Genealogy Section of the site is now up. You can get to it from the menu on the left under "Genealogy" or by clicking Cowan Clan United Genealogy. One of the main, new features is the ability for members to upload their own family data to share with everyone else. When you go to the Genealogy section it is not necessary for you to login. As a matter of fact, the Genealogy section has a completely different login system than the main site. Having a login on the main site does not mean that you will have a login to the Genealogy site. You can still view all trees and genealogical data without logging in. The login feature of the Genealogy site is only for those who have expressed an interest to upload their own GEDCOM files. GEDCOM is a standard format for genealogy data. It stands for GEnealogical Data COMmunications. Most family tree software will allow you to export your tree in GEDCOM format. You can then upload it and share it with everyone else.

Site News Some tidbits about the site

* You can now upload your own picture to use as an avatar. Just go to "Your Info" under "Your Account" and scroll all the way down to the bottom to find the avatar selection area. The only limit is that the avatar cannot be any larger than 80x80 pixels and 8KB (8,192 bytes) in size.

* It is NOT necessary to register as a user in order to use this site. The only two areas that are restricted to registered users are the "Members List" and "Private Messages." Everything else is open to the public.

* When you first go into the downloads section make sure you click on "Cowan Clan United Newsletters Archive" to see the full list of all 8 volumes. The first page there only gives you a teaser of the first 2 volumes.

* Don't forget to look at the forums. In there you may share information with others.

* If you want to send a registered user a quick note then use the "Private Messages" feature. The next time that person logs on they will see that they have a new message waiting. If they are currently online when you send the message then they should see the new message right away.

* Web Links is a great place to share some of your favorite Cowan or genealogy links.

* Under Your Account (if you're a registered user) you can fill in information about yourself.

* And last but not least, please use the Feedback feature or email me directly at rick@cowanclanunited.com. It is only through this information that I will be able to better meet your needs. You can use the feedback for comments, suggestions, corrections, etc. Just please use it.
